And is there a symbol that's global to show people are authentic?  Or country by country at least?

Dear Jo, Greetings and thank you for your question, it's a sharp one and deserves a well thought out answer so let me give it a bit of a go for you. On the one hand, there are people in the field, like myself who have chosen a more traditional route to knowledge and accreditation, i.e. I have a Master's from Sotheby's Institute, London and am a USPAP designated appraiser, which is a US Federal designation which sets standards of ethics I abide by in research and appraisal. Yes, there was a course and a very difficult test and every 2 years the USPAP must be renewed to keep up with the latest and greatest methods. In regards to a global symbol, as of June 29th, 2016 the International Valuation Standards Council (IVSC), which is the global standard setter for valuation practice and valuation profession, and The Appraisal Foundation (Foundation) are creating a bridge of conformity between the USPAP and the IVSC so that globally there will be one, high global standard for us to conform to. We aren't there yet, but hopefully soon. You can always ask someone what professional organizations they are members of and what their experience is. I own an international auction house and appraisal firm which keeps me quite current on realistic global market trends other specialize in different things and ways. On the other hand, some have gained very astute knowledge without a formal degree and this method should not be discredited either, depending upon their experience it is just as valid as traditional education. In all cases, ask questions, talk to the people you are considering working with as there is no single symbol that guarantees authenticity or reputation. In all cases do Google searches about the people you are considering working with. If they are unethical, someone will have posted about it, if several someone's have posted proceed with some caution. When you find wonderful people to work with, that you can trust, that you feel comfortable with rejoice and enjoy the benefit of working with people who truly have your best interests in mind. I do hope this long-winded answer assists you but if I've left any stone un-turned, don't hesitate to ask. Cheers!
