Course Description

Tricia Guild and the Designers Guild design studio teach you how to find your own creative style for interior design and your lifestyle.

You'll learn how to develop your own personal style and where to find inspiration for your interior colour, pattern and style choices. And you'll be building your own design project as you learn.

Throughout this interior design course Tricia will be demonstrating with moodboards how to bring together your style for a room from paint colours, fabrics and accessories. You'll be creating your own moodboard to send to Tricia, as you develop your creative voice.

Tricia will then move onto how to combine colours and textures to express your style. She'll be exploring some of the projects she's worked on and explaining why she's made creative design choices for her clients.

You'll look at how to use patterns, and how patterned materials can be combined to create the best effect in your room.

Finally you'll explore the power of accessorising a room, and how accessories can bring inspiration in a creative life.

This course goes beyond the basics of interior design to equip you to create your own style for living creatively.

Course outline

  • Finding your creative voice

In this introductory lesson, Tricia will tell the fascinating story of how her single shop on London’s King’s Road became a global brand and lifestyle arbiter – shaping the way we view colour, texture, and pattern in our homes.

She will explain her philosophy, her belief that the interiors we inhabit and the things we surround ourselves with, have a profound effect on our well-being and happiness.

Tricia talks about her influences and mentors, describing her own journey through style and taste across time and place.

Tricia will then introduce and explain the concept of the moodboard and its centrality to her creative approach and how this simple but effective technique can be used in your own life in many ways – from designing a room, laying a table, arranging your belongings etc.

  • Colour & Texture

Tricia starts the lesson with a dynamic tour of the King's Road Designers Guild shop, explaining her inspiration and how she has used different colours where and why.

Illustrated with a trove of archive imagery and film, Tricia talks about her use of colour using different projects which showcase key colour combinations from bright, neutral, classical, monochrome. She assesses why they work and potential pitfalls along the way.

Tricia will then go into depth on her use of colour, building a moodboard to illustrate her creative process and showing students how they can create their own room and what they need to consider when doing so.

  • Pattern & Form

Pattern adds life and spirit - choosing the patterns you love – are you geometric, floral or abstract

Form – surfaces and shape – curvy or straight?

This lesson begins as Tricia explains important ways in which she has used pattern, the inspiration, why she did so and what she was trying to achieve.

Sitting down for another student-mentor conversation, Tricia again takes students through different projects she has worked on, which she feels are valuable in explaining pattern. Again, these examples will be richly illustrated so students can best understand what she describes.

Tricia will then select a room where pattern plays a significant role in her design. She will create a moodboard to illustrate her creative process and show students how they can create their own.

  • Bringing it all together

In this lesson, Tricia shares her way of living a creative life - tips and ideas that will enrich the everyday – seasonal changes mark the shift in the seasons and refresh your space.

Light a candle at meals, a few stems in a well-chosen vase, add rugs and warmer textures in the autumn and take them away in the spring.

Change your collection of pictures and hang them in a different way.

Tricia will show how a selection of well-chosen accessories can quickly update and enrich the way you live.

I would recommend this to someone wanting a glimpse into other artists processes and how they get to their final completed works.
