Best trees for a small city garden

Hi - I'm looking for some ideas for good trees for a small city garden.  I like the look of these?  Will they grow in my shady damp garden does anyone know?

Hi Elspeth Many gardeners get bewitched by the white bark of Himalayan birches! Betula utilis var. jacquemontii is ultimately a very big tree but you if you grow it as a multistem specimen the size is restricted and you get more white stems. Selective pruning to thin the shoots in summer prevents the crown of the tree from becoming too dense. Personally I always favour Japanese maples for small gardens. In shade the green leaved varieties are better - you could grow Acer palmatum 'Sango-Kaku' - it has wonderful coral stems with soft green leaves that turn yellow in fall.

Thanks so much! I think I have seen some of those multistem birches outside the Tate Modern in London. If you didn't know Andy McIndoe is one of our experts and has won more gold medals at The Chelsea Flower Show than any other competitor.
