Gala apple tree

I have just discovered 2 areas where the bark has come off of the trunk of my apple tree. First area appears to be a deep large pit where it all looks dead with no noticeable new bark underneath. The second area is around the trunk and adjoining branches but can see new bark underneath. The tree is 3 years old, help please!
