Hi my tomato plants have turned black with large bobbles & the fruit is turning moulds as it ripped  I've been told by friends to dig it up & destroy them  what could I have done to prevent this and can I plant some winter salad where the toms were?

Thank you

Sounds like tomato blight - were they growing outdoors? blight is really difficult to control and prevent. Always comes in when we get that still, muggy weather. First brown spots on leaves ten black lesions, eventually killing the plant. There are more blight resistant varieties such as 'Red Alert' - try one of those and be vigilant. Any signs of brown spots on the leaves, pick them off!.

There's a really good service you can sign up for which warns when blight is prevalent - info here: https://blightwatch.co.uk/ Also - I'd recommend trying to grow blight resistant varieties. Alys Fowler wrote a great piece in the Guardian about tomato blight in which she recommends some varieties, you can read it here: https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle…

Hi Sally, I've been growing blight-resistant tomatoes for some years now - it's the only way you can grow tomatoes outside here in Somerset where there is a lot of blight in the air all through summer. Best varieties for me so far have been Mountain Magic, and for containers Losetto - neither gets blight here and both produce good tomatoes. The trouble with some blight resistant varieties is that they don't have the flavour - and to my mind there's no point in growing tomatoes unless you get the flavour! But Mountain Magic and Losetto both score on all fronts for me.

In the UK 'Losetto' seeds are available from many of the major seed suppliers including Thompson and Morgan and Marshalls. In the US 'Mountain Magic' is widely sold including Johnny's Seeds and Burpee...
