The gift boxed amaryllis has become one of our most popular Christmas gifts in recent years. However, that colourful box often promises more than it contains. Granted the bulbs will bloom, usually very well. However, they will not deliver the same display as a giant 28cm+ bulb which is guaranteed to produce two of more fabulous flower stems each carrying three or four huge flowers.

You’ll find we refer to them as “Hippeastrum”. This is the correct botanical name for these tropical beauties. They used to be amaryllis, to which they remain closely related. However, as the term “amaryllis” has practically become a common name let’s stick with it.
