Industry Experts Launch Bespoke Garden Design Diploma

We've launched a bespoke Garden Design Diploma Collection featuring tuition from the world's greatest designers and plants people. 

The Collection incorporates 11 courses that have been specially selected by the leading lights of the garden and plant design world to deliver all of the key skills and information that the student needs to become a practicing garden designer from the comfort of their own home; a truly unique learning opportunity for those looking to learn more about the art of garden design around a schedule that suits them.

The Garden Design Diploma Collection includes: 

Planting the Piet Oudolf Way – Piet Oudolf (with Dr Noel Kingsbury) Internationally renowned landscape designer, plantsman and leading figure in the New Wave Planting movement. Students will be taught the principles behind the new perennial planting method by one of the forefathers of the movement. Assignments investigate plant structure, plant combinations, seasonality and planting suggestions for different regions. 

Professional Planting Design – Hilary Thomas, Acclaimed garden design lecturer and author. This course will teach how to unify planting schemes and bring a sense of cohesion to the plan. The assignments include looking at the form, texture and habits of plants, their colour and its influence, their role structurally within a scheme, their seasonality, their selection and different planting styles. It also teaches the practicalities of creating a planting plan and a schedule.

An Introduction to Garden Design – Hilary ThomasThis course reveals the garden design process from start to finish. Assignments include an introduction to the various techniques and design principles through to selection of materials, site assessment and surveying, hard landscaping and finally dressing and personalising the space.

Gardening with Grasses – Michael King, Senior Botanist at world-renowned Kew Gardens, designer and author. Students will learn about how to incorporate grasses within planting schemes and the reasons for their use and rise in recent popularity. Assignments include how to choose the best grasses for the site and how they can deliver on design objectives. Perennial Meadow Gardening–Michael King This course will equip any student with the knowledge to confidently select the best plants to create perennial meadow planting schemes and effortlessly integrate them into the landscape.

Designing City & Urban Gardens - Annie Guilfoyle, Award-winning designer and lecturer. A step by step guide to designing small spaces from survey through to plant selection and finishing touches.

A Comprehensive Guide to Choosing, Using and Planting Trees – Andy McIndoe, Winner of 25 consecutive Gold Medals at RHS Chelsea Flower Show, acclaimed writer, broadcaster, blogger and lecturer. This course demonstrates the versatility of trees within a garden setting and the vital role that they can play both aesthetically and practically including assignments on trees for all gardens, planting trees, productive trees, as well as designing with trees.

Shrubs: Making the Most of Them in Your Garden – Andy McIndoeThis course will enable the student to select the right shrubs for any design, with assignments including the role of shrubs, how to care for them, foliage shrubs and shrubs for year-round interest.

The History of Garden Design – Toby Musgrave, International authority of garden history and garden design. Students will learn about the evolution of the garden as an art form, focusing on its history from ancient times through to the modern day, comprehending different styles and their influences and understanding the interaction between landscape and culture.

Planting Design with Perennials – Dr Noel Kingsbury, Internationally acclaimed best- selling author and garden designer, leading figure in naturalistic planting movement. This course offers students access to the principles behind the naturalistic planting movement, and includes understanding perennials, perennials in planting design, perennials in their habitat and perennials throughout the year. 

The Garden Design Diploma Collection includes 12 courses, incorporating over 50 lessons from 8 top tutors. It offers lifetime access to course materials and a flexible study program that fits around the individual with optional assignments and online support from the community.

All students will have direct access to their fellow classmates in the online classroom as well as their tutors, who personally mark their work and answer any queries.
