Acer Atropurpureum

Acer Atropurpureum

by 3 years ago

Hi I have an Acer Atropurpureum which is about 2 years old and has Y shaped branches however the top of the branches have now curled so they are crossing at the top forming a O shape.  Should I prune or leave to se how it forms? I have read conflicting information.  Any help appreciated.

It's getting a bit late to prune it now - avoid pruning it in the spring because acers tend to bleed. If it's just the shape which bothers you you can try gently pulling one branch down and tying it to a stake, holding it in a better position(pieces of old tights are good for this as they are soft but strong!). Leave it for about a year or until you can feel it's not going to ping back to its old position.
