Best time for pruning.

We have a yew hedge and some shaped bay trees. When is the best (or worst) time for pruning them? The bays are conical and about 12 feet tall but were not pruned well last year so quite a lot will have to be taken off them. Will this harm them?

Yew seem pretty resilient but if hard pruning do this in spring if possible. There are not many conifers like Taxus that can regenerate from older wood and tolerate shade. A true survivor! Bay (Laurs nobilis) can be a tad tender in certain area so larger pruning needs to be done in spring. Always ask the question "why prune?"
