Why Garden Designers Love Echinaceas

• Long lasting flowers that go on and on all summer
• Can work in both for a traditional cottage garden look (think old England), or in a very contemporary prairie style planting (think Piet Oudolf)
• The name Echinacea comes from the Greek word ěchīnos, a hedgehog! (how can you not love that)
• One of the best reasons for using Echinaceas, is because they provide great Autumn interest (with a long flowering season) and winter sculptures, especially when frosted
• The chunky black roots are edible and have a strong flavour.
• The dried root is said to boost the immune system and is widely sold and used as a preventative measure against colds. (our puppy also went wild for the roots – I think he knew about the medicinal properties too).
• My personal favourite Echinacea is Echinacea Green Jewel. It’s not understated; in fact it’s quite bold. But it’s not quite as cheery and openly happy as the traditional hot colour palettes of echinaceas like purpurea or ruby. I like its greenness. And daring to be different.
